Archive for October, 2007There were supposed to be winds overnight but I didn’t hear any. First sound of wind is at 6:30 this morning. I immediately get out of bed and turn on the internet connection to check the weather. We’re still under a High Wind Warning, but now it’s only supposed to last until till 5:00 pm instead of 7:00 pm. Everything seems to be OK until around 9:00 am when all hell breaks loose. The trees we thought would protect us from the wind start pelting us with pine cones and branches. I look out the window and see our next door neighbors leaving. Parry notices they move to another site and I begin to wonder if we should follow suit. The winds are picking up strength and the satellite dish is starting to wobble in the wind. Parry is working on his blog but I’m having trouble concentrating. Moments later a shower of pine cones pummel the coach roof making all of us jump and a sudden blast of wind sends the satellite dish twirling on the tripod. For a moment I think we’re going to lose it. It’s tipping and twirling and looks like it’s going to fly away. Luckily the Claws hold, but I decide to bring it in anyway. I’d rather not take a chance on losing it. We decide to move the coach away from the trees but leave all of our hookups – sewer, hoses, etc – where they are so we can move back after the storm passes. Parry calls the ranger station to see if we can move to another site but the ranger says no, we’re not allowed to occupy two sites at once. So we empower ourselves to move into the parking lot by the tennis court and sit the storm out there. Better that than have our air conditioners and vent covers cracked by falling debris. We face the coach in the direction of the wind. I haven’t heard of it happening, but I have an irrational fear that a strong side gust will topple us. Benny & Buddy are hiding, they don’t like the sounds of the storm. Every now and then we get hit by a fierce blast that sends our living room slide topper sailing. It makes a loud screeching sound that’s unnerving. I still feel safer here than under the trees. We start our generator so we can run the heater and Parry can work on his blog. I’m too nervous to concentrate on work so I just sit and watch the storm. The trees bend and flail and the rain dances sideways across the parking lot. A couple of coaches come in off the road. One has a slide topper hanging out of it’s spool and another has their large awning drooping. I don’t want to imagine what it’s like driving in this wind. I know I would be freaking. Around 3:30 pm the wind begins to die down. The Weather & Emergency Alert Monitor comes on to tell us that there is another High Wind Warning for this evening. At 4:00 pm we decide to just move to another site. We find a site out in the open and proceed to move all of our stuff to the new location. Except for the satellite dish, we get everything set back up again before dark. We settle in for the evning and expect to be rockin and rollin again before the night is over. ![]() This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License. |
